Sukalo: investigation of genocide of the Belarusian people during WWII to go down in history

The importance of preserving peace as the highest value is fully reflected in the history of Belarus during the Great Patriotic War. Attempts to falsify it, to rehabilitate Nazism, to distort real assessments and results of military events pose a serious threat to the peace and security of our state – as noted by Chairman of Belarus’ Supreme Court Valentin Sukalo at the international scientific and practical conference dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, held today in Minsk.

“Since 2020 alone, Belarusian courts have brought 650 people to administrative responsibility, 6 to criminal liability, and 3 people were convicted for the propaganda of Nazism or public display, production, and distribution of Nazi symbols or paraphernalia," he explained.

The Chairman of the Supreme Court also said that when courts considered cases related to the events of 2020, numerous cases of manifestations of extremism, riots and protest activity specifically under Nazi symbols and ideology were established, “In these conditions, the investigation by the General Prosecutor’s Office of the criminal case of the genocide of the Belarusian people during the Great Patriotic War and the post-war period is of high relevance and increased state and public importance. This investigation helps to establish the true scale and consequences of the genocide, counter contemporary challenges and manifestations of Nazism while restoring historical truth and justice.”

“This investigation will forever go down in the history of the Belarusian state and the national legal system as unprecedented in its content, complexity and significance for the Belarusian and world community,” said Valentin Sukalo.
