Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said at a government meeting, “A new international airport will be built in Tbilisi. The capacity of the current airport is approximately 4-4.5 million passengers. You know that our tourism sector is developing well, and we expect to welcome an increasing number of travellers in the future. Infrastructure should also keep up with the times.”

Mr. Kobakhidze added that the country's authorities were considering the option of expanding the existing international airport in Tbilisi. The implementation of this project would increase the capacity to 15m passengers per year and would require $900m of investment.

The new airport is expected to service 19m passengers annually, with the possibility of further growth. The project is estimated at $1.260bn.
