Bangladesh formally applied for BRICS membership

Bangladesh has officially applied to join the BRICS bloc, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – as reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the country’s PM

Earlier, the Dhaka Tribune newspaper wrote that the request to join the organisation was sent after a meeting between Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in Geneva last week.

“Bangladesh officially applied to join the BRICS last week and negotiations are currently underway, we hope to receive it soon,” the message reads.

It is also reported that the expansion of the BRICS will be discussed at the summit, which is to be held in South Africa in August 2023.
