"South African President [Cyril Ramaphosa] agreed to our request to help Madagascar become a BRICS partner state," Michael Randrianirina said on TVM, noting that he expects to attend the BRICS summit in India scheduled for June.

Madagascar may become the fourth African partner country of BRICS, along with Algeria, Nigeria, and Uganda.

On October 14th, 2025, Madagascar’s National Assembly (Lower House of Parliament) voted to remove President Andry Rajoelina from power due to his absence from the country. The Supreme Constitutional Court supported the decision and invited the military, led by Michael Randrianirina, to take power into their own hands. On October 17th, Michael Randrianirina was sworn in by the Supreme Constitutional Court as Interim President.
