Lukashenko: updated Constitution created by and for Belarusians

The introduction of amendments and additions to the Basic Law has become a new stage in the state-legal construction of Belarus, and, by voting in a referendum for the proposed changes, citizens chose a strong state based on national traditions of people’s power, ideals of peace, humanism and social justice as a model for the country’s development – as stated by President Aleksandr Lukashenko at today’s meeting with deputies of the House of Representatives and members of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the seventh convocation

Speaking about the results of the MPs’ legislative activity, the Head of State noted that 364 laws had been adopted by the National Assembly of the seventh convocation, eleven of them had been initiated by deputies of the House of Representatives and one by the Council of the Republic.

“The point, of course, is not the number of legislative acts you have adopted, but the creation of optimal legal conditions for peaceful and dynamic development of all spheres of life of the state and our society. The key goal of law-making in the realities in which the activities of the National Assembly of the seventh convocation were carried out was to consolidate the achieved quality of the Belarusian state’s sovereignty. The introduction of amendments and additions to the Basic Law has become a new stage of state-legal construction, and the contours of the updated Constitution were revealed during a large-scale public dialogue, which culminated in the 6th Belarusian People's Congress,” Aleksandr Lukashenko addressed those present.

As noted by the Head of State, deputies of the House of Representatives and members of the Council of the Republic worked as part of the Constitutional Commission, took an active part in developing proposals and large-scale explanatory work with the population, “By voting in a referendum for the proposed changes, our citizens chose a strong state based on national traditions of people’s power, ideals of peace, humanism and social justice as a model for Belarus’ development. They supported the norms aimed at preserving traditional values, the memory of the Great Patriotic War, and strengthening the patriotic component in the education of our younger generation. Differently speaking, the updated Constitution was literally created by the people and for the people – and this is the key point. We see that people believe in Belarus, they associate their life and the life of their children and grandchildren with the country. I am now talking not just about our citizens: I also mean foreigners who have chosen Belarus as their second homeland. There is an increasing number of them.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed that the adopted constitutional innovations in terms of the redistribution of powers between the President, Parliament, Government, local government and self-government bodies are aimed at ensuring that all branches of power work effectively, fully perform their functions, make decisions independently and, most importantly, are responsible for their implementation. “This is the key to our country’s further successful development," the Belarusian leader stressed.
