Valery Vakulchik, who previously headed the Belarusian Biathlon Federation, informed on the team’s strengths and weaknesses, also referring to the weak psychological preparation of some Belarusian athletes, who – unlike ‘the more seasoned and experienced’ – fail to always cope with themselves, “We are trying to do our best. We are determined to ensure that our athletes not simply participate but win.”

“You are determined, but, alas, everything is deteriorating so far,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said, adding, “Of course, I understand that sport is sport. Everything is easily understandable in biathlon. Learn from Johannes Boe [Norwegian biathlete]. He can miss twice but finish the first. If you do not know how to shoot, then run.”

The meeting also focused on the biathlon reserve, and the sports officials assured the President that the Belarusian reserve would be ready by time of the next Olympics.

“So, you will show them to me this summer, at our roller ski tracks. I will see what they will demonstrate,” Aleksandr Lukashenko responded.
