Lukashenko: Belarusian People’s Congress is strategy for our future life

The Belarusian People's Congress should determine the global and strategic directions of the country's development, and it should not deal with the issues that are beyond its competence – as noted by President Aleksandr Lukashenko at today’s meeting on bringing definite laws in line with the updated Constitution

The bill On Belarusian People's Congress has been discussed at today’s meeting, and the Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly on Legislation, Svetlana Lyubetskaya, addressed to the President with a report. She informed that – following a public discussion – special Article 4 has been highlighted in the document in order to strengthen a special status of the Belarusian People’s Congress and clearly distinguish the competencies. In line with the President’s instruction, the Congress has no right to replace state bodies, perform their functions or interfere into their activities.

The Belarusian leader stressed, “This is a very important point, which envisages that the Belarusian People’s Congress does not interfere, but deals with its own issues. It is no need to address it with such problems as construction of houses, fences, roofs or toilets. This is not a function [of the Belarusian People’s Congress]! Exceptional, global issues – that need to be resolved in our country – should be considered there, avoiding such minor problems like fences or roofs: local authorities (they remain functioning), the Government and the President will oversee the latter. They should solve the issues.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko then once again emphasised the fundamental definition of the Belarusian People’s Congress, “This is a strategy of how we will live on, and how we will develop.”
