Lavrov: under US pressure, Europe decided to break up Eurasian continent into two camps

Europe, under pressure from the United States, has decided to break up the Eurasian continent into two camps – as stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during his today’s meeting with the President of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko

The Russian Foreign Minister first of all thanked the Head of State for the invitation and for the initiative of holding the international Eurasian Security: Reality and Prospects in Transforming World conference in Minsk, “This is now more relevant than ever: when Europe – a single huge continent richest in natural resources that was given by God and history – has decided to break up into two camps under the dictation of the United States. It was observed in Soviet times, in the Cold War era. However, the economic ties were not interrupted then, but Europe is now going to direct losses under pressure from Washington.”

Mr. Lavrov mentioned the speech of the Hungarian Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, at today’s conference as an example. It was noted there that energy carriers in Europe are five times more expensive than in the United States. “Deindustrialisation, transfer of production… I think it was one of the Americans’ tasks: to weaken Europe, not to give it the opportunity to economically straighten its shoulders and become independent. It is an extremely relevant topic," Mr. Lavrov said.

The diplomat added that, at the conference, both Belarus and Russia stressed their openness to co-operation with everyone only on an equal and honest basis. The Hungarian side adheres to the same position.

“We do not close the doors in these processes for anyone. However, if Europe now prefers to isolate itself, then – as you have said – we will have to shift from the division of labour to the independent, sovereign creation of everything we need for development, for security. Again, if and when they come to their senses, realise that they are depriving themselves of mutually beneficial economic prospects, and return, then we – and all those who will co-operate in integration structures – will look at what ideas they will come up with," Mr. Lavrov stressed.
