The water release is likely to start shortly after a meeting of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida with the US and South Korean presidents, Joe Biden and Yoon Suk Yeol, in America next week. Mr. Kishida will report then how safe this procedure will be.

In July, the Japanese Nuclear Regulatory Agency gave permission to the operator of the Tokyo Electric Power plant to start releasing water, which, according to Japan and the International Atomic Energy Agency, is safe. Despite this, the neighbouring countries fear that the procedure may pollute commercial fish and seafood species.

"Bottom-trawling fishing is scheduled to start off Fukushima, northeast of Tokyo, in September, and the Government aims to start the water discharge before the fishing season gets under way,” Reuters reports.
