Any decisions made in the information sphere should be well-considered and balanced – as stated by Information Minister Dmitry Zhuk in his talk with reporters, following today’s meeting with the President of Belarus, at which personnel decisions were made
Last week, the YouTube administration deleted the channels of the largest Belarusian national media outlets: BELTA, ONT, and STV. The reporters asked the new Information Minister to share his view on whether drastic retaliatory measures need to be taken.
Mr. Zhuk commented, “Any decision, especially the one dealing with a ban, must be clearly thought out, and its consequences should be taken into consideration. It needs to be reasoned, and most importantly, it is to be appropriate and effective. If we declare something but fail to implement it, then it's better not to declare anything at all. As for the situation with the platforms that the citizens of Belarus use, it’s a very delicate issue. You know the President's position: he is not a proponent of bans. We need to look for other mechanisms of interrelations with major players in the global media space.”
