The decision of Moldova to withdraw from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mihai Popsoi, goes against the interests of the Moldovan people — as stated by Igor Dodon, former president of the republic and leader of the country’s largest opposition Socialist Party, TASS reports
“The decision to leave the CIS, announced by Foreign Minister Mihai Popsoi, contradicts the interests of the Moldovan people. The course towards severing ties with the CIS and Russia, pursued by President Maia Sandu and her ruling Party of Action and Solidarity, is driven by Western sponsors and could lead us to a tragedy similar to what the Ukrainian people are experiencing. It does not reflect the wishes of the majority of citizens, who want to maintain friendly and trade relations with the CIS states and Russia,” the politician said.
