Belarusian geneticists named four factors that affect life expectancy

Yelena Mikhalenko, a leading researcher of the laboratory of eco-genetics and biotechnology at the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, has informed on the current research of the scientific institution

Since 2018, studies have been conducted together with the Belarusian Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education and the Minsk Regional Clinical Hospital for Disabled Great Patriotic War Veterans to investigate the genome of a long-liver. Doctors have collected unique samples. “There is a DNA collection of 190 long-livers, and we have also collected five hundred DNA samples of 60-89-olds,” Ms. Mikhalenko said.

Based on the data available, scientists have found out that four factors affect a person's life expectancy: genetics, lifestyle, environment, social sphere and healthcare. The first three are the most important ones, being responsible for a potential of human longevity. In turn, the latter matters only by 10 percent.
