Belarus’ Energy Minister: BelNPP to meet growing demand for electricity, including electric transport

The Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP) will satisfy the growing demand for electricity, including for electric transport – as stated by Belarus’ Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich in his talk with the Belarus 1 TV channel

“Last year, the BelNPP provided 28.5 percent of electricity from the total consumption countrywide, and this figure will increase. One of the tasks of the station is to meet the growing demand for electricity and create stimulating conditions for its use in related industries, especially for the development of electric transport,” underlined Viktor Karankevich.

In total, since the first power unit was connected to the network, the BelNPP has produced more than 27bn kWh of electricity, enabling to replace over 7bn cubic metres of natural gas (according to calculations). The nuclear power plant is also making a significant contribution to mitigating the consequences of climate change: greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere have been reduced by more than 12 million tonnes.

“Moreover, in 2023, the length of our power lines has increased significantly: 2,700km of power lines were modernised, reconstructed and built. At the same time, work is being carried out to modernise and construct new substations of various voltage classes. The same work will continue in 2024 and further on. This year, we plan to modernise, reconstruct and build at least 3,000km of electricity supply network,” added the official.
