Ambassador: Belarus strongly supported Syria immediately after the earthquake

Belarus sent military medics, equipment for a field hospital and medicines to Syria on February 14th to help earthquake victims

As noted by the Head of the Military-Medical Department of the Defence Ministry, Colonel Aleksandr Malyukh, a unique medical unit of Belarus’ Armed Forces is able to provide assistance in almost any conditions.

There are 14 ladies among the specialists, and one of them is a senior operating nurse of the special medical unit, Olga Yakhnovets. “I participated in a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, like many guys from our squad. We also take part in exercises on the territory of Belarus and Russia – so we have experience. The accumulated knowledge and skills will be useful in Syria as well. It is very important to help each other, since you never know what situation you will find yourself in and who will be your close friend,” she noted.

The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Syrian Arab Republic to Belarus, Muhammad Al-Omrani, was among those coming to see the Belarusian doctors off. The diplomat thanked Belarusians for help, “We have very serious problems after the earthquake. A couple of days ago, we received your humanitarian aid, and Belarusian military doctors are now being sent to us. We have been waiting for the latter very much. There is a good saying: friendship is known in trouble. Belarus is a friendly country for us, it supported our country immediately after the earthquake. We received condolences from the President of Belarus, then your government contacted us and offered to provide humanitarian assistance. Unfortunately, sanctions have been imposed on Syria, which means that many countries cannot help us or are afraid to do so.”

Belarus is not afraid of sanctions, and it has been helping Syria for many years. Since 2015, several humanitarian cargoes have been sent to this country. In addition, Belarus annually welcomes Syrian children for health improvement in the Zubrenok camp. As noted by Muhammad Al-Omrani, this confirms that the Belarus-Syria relations are very strong.
