Almost 90% of orphans in Belarus are placed with families

Family forms of education are organised in Belarus for 88 percent of orphans and children left without parental care, Yelena Simakova, chief specialist of the Education Ministry’s Main Department of Educational Work and Youth Policy told sb.by

As of early 2022, there were just over 16,000 orphans in the country. Of these, 7,675 are placed with guardian families, i.e., families of blood relatives. A significant part – almost 3,000 children – are brought up in adoptive families. Meanwhile, 1,822 children live in family-type orphanages and 351 children are in children’s villages. All these are family forms of life arrangement for minors left without parents.

As far as boarding schools are concerned, 1,620 orphans are brought up there today. These include infant orphanages, child care homes, boarding schools for disabled children and special auxiliary boarding schools.
