Co-operation with Belarus is a priority of Vietnamese foreign policy, notes President of Vietnam Truong Tan Sang, on meeting Belarus’ Foreign Minister, Vladimir Makei, during his official visit

President Truong Tan Sang remarked that his country still remembers the invaluable aid provided by the Belarusian people during Vietnam’s struggle for independence and during the post-war recovery of the national economy. He and Mr. Makei noted their pleasure at seeing positive dynamics of co-operation in recent years, and a larger number of visits at all levels. They are confident that such contacts will continue to grow but believe that trade and investment collaboration between Belarus and Vietnam could be supported by Vietnam signing a free trade agreement with the Customs Union. Membership of the Customs Union could make a tangible contribution to implementing joint projects in Belarus and Vietnam.

The Belarusian and Vietnamese Foreign Ministers discussed trade-economic issues in detail and analysed progress in implementing arrangements made earlier at intergovernmental level, including the 2013-2015 programme for interstate economic co-operation. They discussed the implementation of major joint projects, such as those relating to automobile building and telecommunications. Progress towards signing an agreement on a free trade zone between the Customs Union and Vietnam also came under scrutiny, as did preparations for the Days of Belarusian Culture in Vietnam in 2014 and the Days of Vietnamese Culture in Belarus in 2015.

The ministers have signed a co-operative agreement between the Belarusian Foreign Ministry and the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry, as well as a plan for interaction between our two ministries from 2014-2015.
