Lukashenko: no power capable of breaking Belarus away from Russia, Russia from Belarus today

There is no power capable of breaking Belarus away from Russia and Russia from Belarus today — as stated by President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko at his meeting with State Secretary of Belarus-Russia Union State Sergei Glazyev on February 16th

“Some Russians say that someone’s trying to break Belarus away from Russia. I won’t even comment on this. I’ll just say one thing: there is no power capable of breaking Belarus away from Russia and Russia from Belarus today. Events have unfolded in a way that brought us together, perhaps, for decades and centuries to come. We in Belarus have geared towards Russia. We have so much there, if not everything. We have our resources there, our market there, economically speaking. We’re completely at one in this respect. The same’s true in politics. The attempt to build a common union [referring to the Union State of Belarus and Russia] comes from our centuries-old ties as well,” the Belarusian leader noted.

In this context, Aleksandr Lukashenko touched upon Belarus-US talks, “We manage to address our problems during these talks. But in no way we’re doing it at the expense of our brotherly and beloved Russia.”

According to the President of Belarus, the issue of Belarus-Russia ties arose only once in early stages of talks with US representatives, “I brought it up. And I immediately asked Americans not to discuss this topic.. I said we have long since made our mind up about Russia — it’s clear and everyone knows this, we’ll be acting together. So don’t try to drive a wedge between us and somehow break us. And Americans replied ‘We weren’t even going to discuss this item at the talks. We totally understand what Russia means to Belarus and Belarus to Russia’. This was an honest statement. I don’t know who the future presidents of Belarus will be, but I’m starting to believe that they will be more like Lukashenko. They will not distance themselves from Russia. If anyone hopes that there’ll be a change with some opposition, other fools and so on — our presidents are right here in Belarus. So it’s all set with Russia. What matters is that Russia supports Belarus when needed and, God forbid, doesn't turn its back on Belarus. Breaking us away from Russia… Look, there’s just the two of us left — Putin and I, Russian and Belarus.”
