Belarus’ National Library centenary included in UNESCO list

The National Library of Belarus will celebrate its 100th anniversary on September 15th, 2022. The decision to include the jubilee in the list of commemorative dates was taken at the 41st session of the UNESCO General Conference.

In total, the UNESCO calendar for 2022-2023 includes sixty-seven most important events from around the world, including the 550th anniversary of astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, the 500th anniversary of the circumnavigation of Ferdinand Magellan, the 150th jubilee of opera singer Fyodor Chaliapin and composer Sergei Rachmaninoff, the 100th birthday of literary critic Yuri Lotman and opera diva Maria Callas.

As reported by the National Library, the fact that Belarus’ proposal was included in the list is an extremely important achievement: it is an unconditional victory of the Belarusian cultural diplomacy. Participation in the UNESCO calendar confirms the library's significant contribution to development of the world culture and promotion of the organisation's activities. Such co-operation contributes to integration of the National Library of Belarus into the world library community and, while enriching its activities aimed at preservation and use of the country's cultural heritage.
