The Zapad-2025 strategic joint exercise of the Belarusian and Russian armed forces will include training on planning the deployment of nuclear weapons and the use of the Oreshnik missile system. All branches and units of the Belarusian army will participate — as stated by Belarus’ Defence Minister, Lieutenant General Viktor Khrenin, in response to journalists’ questions after a closed-door report to the Head of State.
“We intend to address the issues related to planning the use of nuclear weapons. This is an important element of our strategic deterrence, primarily as directed by the Head of State. We must be prepared for any scenario. Given the situation unfolding along our western and northern borders, we cannot passively watch the militarisation and military activities there. Although we show our openness and peacefulness, we must always keep our powder dry. After all, this is a weapon of immense power, capable of inflicting unacceptable damage on any enemy attempting to enter our territory,” Mr. Khrenin highlighted.
Belarus’ Defence Minister also pointed out that NATO leaders frequently use our military drills as a pretext to carry out their own manoeuvres. Their dates and locations near the Belarusian borders are deliberately postponed.
“The actions of the Polish military-political leadership are particularly concerning. They aim to create a force of over 30,000 to 34,000 troops. Based on our evaluation, this already constitutes a significant formation. It requires close monitoring and an appropriate response. Regarding the Oreshnik system, the Head of State has addressed this issue several times; all decisions have been finalised, the site has been chosen, and work is currently underway. Naturally, during our Zapad exercise, in co-operation with our Russian counterparts, we will address the planning for the deployment of this type of weapon,” the Lieutenant General stressed.
