Sambo wrestlers gain strength

Belarusian national team claims 10 awards at the Sambo World Cup stage, hosted by Bulgarian Burgas

On the first day of the competition, Belarusian sambo wrestlers claimed nine medals, with Ivan Aniskevich (under 62kg) and Yelizaveta Moiseenko (under 80kg) snatching gold. Moreover, Yelizaveta learnt of her victory even before the start of competitions when it turned out that she was the only athlete in her category at the tournament. Nevertheless, according to the rules, she stood on the podium and the anthem of Belarus was performed in her honour.

Tatiana Matsko (under 64kg), Olga Namazova (under 72kg), Alexander Koksha (under 74kg) and Yuri Rybak (over 100kg) lost their finals and received silver medals.

Yekaterina Prokopenko sensationally beat Israeli Alice Schlesinger in the under 64kg category and earned bronze. Bronze medals were also received by Anzhela Paim-Kraskovskaya (under 72kg) and Andrey Kazusenok (under 90kg). On the second day of the competitions, Belarusian Svetlana Timoshenko earned gold in the under 80kg category.

Ten awards is a good result, taking into account that we still have time to bring athletes to the peak of their form before the World Championship, which is due in November 2014 in Narita, Japan.
