The first elements of the Belarusian Antarctic Station will be delivered to the Antarctic in the middle of December

Alexey Gaidashov, Deputy Director of the Republican Centre of Polar Researches of the National Academy of Sciences, and Head of the Belarusian Antarctic Expedition, explained. “The time of delivery of the first elements for the building of the Belarusian Antarctic Station has been decided at a meeting of participants of the work team of Belarus and Russia on the practical implementation of the existing agreement about co-operation of the two states in the Antarctic.” On November 1st, the research ship, Akademik Fiodorov will go from St. Petersburg to the Antarctic. The ship will arrive in the district of the deployment of the Belarusian Antarctic Expedition, near to the Vechernyaya Mountain and then certain elements of the future station will be delivered with the help of a helicopter.

The ship will deliver participants of the seventh Belarusian Antarctic Expedition, fuel, equipment and foodstuffs. “During the 3.5 month expedition, we plan to conduct preparatory work connected with the construction of the Belarusian Antarctic Station, including the assembling of foundations for the following building modules,” Alexey Gaidashov says.

The Head of the Belarusian Antarctic Expedition noted that the Russian side has confirmed its readiness to provide organisational and logistical support for the construction of the station.
