Buda-Koshelevo hospital received its first support from the Japanese Government in 2008: modern ultrasound apparatus costing over $76,000. This time, the hospital has gained endoscopic equipment worth more than $57,000. Chief doctor Oleg Kisten tells us, “More than 70 percent of local people live in villages. We are unique in the Gomel Region in serving so many rural areas, from where people have difficulty in accessing medical treatment. Our endoscopic equipment allows us to conduct the same diagnostic testing as in the regional centre, so we no longer need to send our patients to Gomel.”

The Japanese Government has been funding humanitarian projects in Belarus since 2004, signing 31 contracts and donating medical equipment worth $2.7m
