Guests of Belarusian gites can treat themselves to an unusual dish.

The Kostyukevich spouses, hosts of the ‘Grapevine Snail’ cottage in Gorodok district offer their guests a rare delicacy -- grapevine snails. Grown right there on the farm, the product is absolutely environmentally friendly.

“I cook the delicacy by my own recipe which I devised having slightly altered and improved recipes from different sources. However, the zest of the specialty of the house, is, of course, a secret,” says Angelica Kostyukevich.

To have freshly prepared snails, visitors should order the dish three days in advance. First, snails need cleaning in order to remove everything inedible from their bodies. The cooking process itself takes just a few hours. In winter cooking this dish is more complicated as snails hide from the cold. Therefore, prudent hosts prepare snails well in advance.

Can snails be considered a dish of Belarusian cuisine? This is a good question. The hosts of ‘Grapevine Snail consider that it is quite a traditional food. According to Angelica, men are more willing to taste this exotic meal than women. No wonder, as snails are very useful for men`s health.

By the way, grapevine snails are not that exotic for Belarus. Local aristocrats once loved to regale themselves with snails that would be bred in many estates.
