Smorgon hosted activities to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the beginning of First World War
During the events, marking the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War, in Smorgon
A public re-enactment of the terrible battles that occurred during the First Word War was performed by members of military-historical clubs and uniform public associations which specialise in the WWI period.
The city was chosen as the venue for this remembrance event for a specific reason — from September, 1915 to February, 1918 the line of the Russian-German front passed right through Smorgon. The city did not surrender to the enemy during those 810 days, and tens of thousands of soldiers and officers died here.
