The gloves Ali wore during the famous fight were sold to an anonymous bidder at auction for nearly 300,000 Euros. The fight was the first of three between them in the 1970s, with each boxer guaranteed around 1.9 million Euros — a record for the era.

In 1971, Frazier officially held the title of Heavyweight Champion of the World; a title Ali was stripped of because of his refusal to participate in the Vietnam War. The US Supreme Court overturned his conviction in 1971 and with it, his boxing licence was reinstated.
