Sad news for Belarusian fans from Open Mexican Tennis Championship
Victoria Azarenko has been obliged to retire from the event before her second-round match against Dominika Cibulkova, following a wrist injury. The formerly first seeded player was injured during her first match, against Polona Hercog, straining a muscle while delivering a volley. Despite the pain, the Belarusian managed to win the match, but has now chosen to retire from the tournament to avoid aggravating the strain.
“It was a hard decision. I injured my wrist and the doctor recommended that I not take risks. I’ve no desire to repeat my former mistakes and hope to return another time. I try to listen to my body and I want to assure myself that the injury isn’t serious. I may not make the Indian Wells tournament,” Vika comments.
Meanwhile, Belarusian Olga Govortsova has been defeated by Sloane Stephens, seeded second, in a match lasting 81 minutes. She had earlier beaten world number 76, Lara Arruabarrena of Spain: 6:1, 6:2.
