The fire is out of control on several fronts and threatening the outskirts of Adelaide. With conditions described as the worst since 1983, there are fears that further wind changes could accelerate the fire. Smoke from the affected area in the Mount Lofty Ranges northeast of Adelaide can be seen from far away.
The authorities have declared a major emergency, granting powers for people to be moved forcibly from their homes, and for others to be prevented from entering the region.
“I need to impress on those South Australians who are living around the Southern Mount Lofty Ranges that we are dealing with an incredibly dangerous fire. Your life is at risk and we’re asking you to implement your bush fire survival plans,” said the Premier of South Australia, Jay Weatherill.
Many residents have fled to safer ground but some have chosen to stay and defend their properties. Several homes have been confirmed destroyed but it’s thought dozens may have been lost.
