Vladimir Makei calls on delegates to find efficient ways to counteract new drug varieties at the UN General Assembly session

Belarus’ Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei called for the participants of the 30th special session of the UN General Assembly on the world drug problem to pay attention to the need to search for effective ways to counteract new psychoactive substances.

The Minister noted the importance of the joint comprehensive resolution on the issue initiated by Belarus with Australia and the United States. The document was adopted at the 59th session of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs in March 2016.

He shared Belarus’ positive experiences in the fight against the distribution of drugs with the Assembly, stressing the vital role of the family as a support system and of adequate drugs education in the fight against the drug problem. The Minister also noted that a serious barrier to the distribution of drugs can be the rejection of them by society.

Mr. Makei took note of the existing link between the illegal distribution of drugs and other threats: terrorism, human trafficking and money laundering.

In his words, success in combating any of the abovementioned crimes depends on our collective progress in the fight against these global challenges.
