The checkpoints will allow fast frontier crossing for residents of border areas, as it was stated by Alexander Pavlovsky, chairman at State Committee of Belarusian border forces.
According to him, at present this question is being processed. There is a preliminary confirmation from European Commission that these checkpoints will be organized for citizens who live within 30 km from Belarus-Lithuania border. Like last year, residents of both border areas will be able to visit their relatives on Christmas and New Year. And after opening of fast checkpoints they will enjoy this opportunity each day, as chief Belarusian frontiersman emphasized.
He also noted that by June 2006 Belarus would complete demarcation and legal implementation of entire Baltic frontier section 850 km long. The border is already equipped with border signs and all necessary infrastructure elements. Today there is little left to do: about 100 km at Latvia section and small sections on lakes to be equipped with floating beacons along the frontier line.
