Ornithologists discover the world’s oldest Terek sandpiper in Turov
A bird recently recovered from a trap at a ringing station has been wearing its ring for 17 years. Until now, the oldest Terek sandpiper was thought to be only 16 years old, hailing from Finland.
The Terek sandpiper is a rare bird for Belarus and this one is a gem. According to the APB BirdLife Belarus public association, the bird was registered as a baby back in June 1999. Old records have helped employees at the Scientific and Practical Centre for Bio-resources of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus monitor its life-journey. It was trapped again in 2005 and 2011, and is thought to have flown around 200,000km since hatching.
The Terek sandpipers nest from Finland to Chukotka and spend winter in Eastern Africa. Meanwhile, the Turov meadows, in Europe, offer comfortable habitats for wetland birds. Preserving them for such birds is, therefore, essential.
