Core containment casing, produced in Russia, delivered for second reactor at Belarusian nuclear power station
The core containment casing was delivered by waterways, road and rail, traversing 3,000km along the rivers Dnieper, Volga, Sheksna, Svir and Volkhov, before transferring to ‘land’ near the city of Veliky Novgorod. The route was authorised by branches of Russian Railways, city administrations and federal road services, allowing the heavy and unwieldy component to be safely delivered to the Belarusian nuclear power station construction site.
According to the Director General of AEM Technologies JSC, Yevgeny Pakermanov, great efforts have been made to deliver the equipment to the Belarusian nuclear power station using the new route. In future, it will allow equipment to be delivered to the nuclear power station via Russia and Belarus without transiting via third countries. The containment casing is designed to protect nuclear power stations, with the conical structure catching and holding liquid and solid radioactive materials in the event of an accident destroying the reactor.
