Minsk’s satellite towns to specialise in various fields of activity
“Satellite towns should not be considered as purely residential areas, providing not only a comfortable living environment but creating new jobs. Each satellite town should specialise in a certain field of activity. For example, Fanipol will become a machine-building town while Smolevichi will be developed alongside the Chinese-Belarusian Industrial Park. Minsk also pins high hopes on Rudensk,” notes the Deputy Chairman of the Minsk City Executive Committee’s Architecture and Urban Development Committee, Pavel Luchinovich. It is expected that the development of satellites will accommodate around 130,000 people, including Minskers and those wishing to move to the capital.
By 2017, the volume of housing construction in Minsk will be reduced by almost half: if, in 2014, 1 million sq.m of housing is built in the capital then, in 2015, the figure will fall to 900,000 sq.m. In 2016 and 2017, respectively, it will reduce to 750,000 sq.m. and 600,000 sq.m.
