Russian Health Ministry reveals details of trial for COVID-19 intranasal vaccine
An intranasal vaccine against coronavirus infection is undergoing the second stage of clinical trials – as noted by Aleksei Sobolev, Honoured Doctor of the Russian Federation, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Mycology, Allergology and Immunology of the North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov at the Russian Health Ministry, chief allergist of the Leningrad Region of the Russian Federation, during his talk with Rossiya 1 TV channel
According to the expert, the vaccine trials will be completed only next year.
“An intranasal vaccine is currently undergoing phase II of clinical trials among adult volunteers. Testing will be completed on December 31st, 2023. Therefore, at the moment, the intranasal vaccine cannot be used, since clinical trials are still underway,” explained Mr. Sobolev.
The doctor advised everyone to get revaccinated if possible and not wait until the end of the trials, as the studies may show that the intranasal vaccine is ineffective.
By the way, intranasal (mucosal) vaccines are developed in the form of drops or nasal spray. It is expected that the drug will provide local mucosal immunity and thereby prevent infection with coronavirus.
