Zakharova: response to asset confiscation may affect Western property under Russia’s jurisdiction
Moscow’s response to the West’s confiscation of Russian assets may extend to Western property and funds under Russia’s jurisdiction – as stated by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, TASS reports
“Our country has a significant amount of Western funds and property under Russia’s jurisdiction. Russian retaliatory policy and retaliatory actions may apply to all this,” Ms. Zakharova said, answering the question of what the response to these actions of the West might be.
“Of course, no one will disclose the nature of these retaliatory actions, so the arsenal of political and economic countermeasures is wide,” the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson added.
Ms. Zakharova also drew attention to the fact that Moscow has received direct signals from a number of G7 countries that they are not going to take such measures against Russia, while other G7 states won’t do this because they are afraid of the answer.
Earlier, Agence France-Presse, citing the Elysee Palace, reported that the G7 leaders had reached an agreement to allocate $50bn to Ukraine from profits received from frozen Russian assets by late 2024. The EU, Canada, the US and Japan froze about $300bn of Russia’s assets after the start of the conflict.
