WTO to study crisis with supplies of Belarusian and Russian fertilisers

The world will be further under a threat of growing food prices if exports of fertilisers from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine are not restored – as stated by the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director General, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, TASS reports

“The issue of fertilisers is of a key nature. What is happening around [supplies from] Ukraine, Russia and Belarus is a serious challenge," Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said during a joint press conference with Brazilian Foreign Minister Carlus Alberto Franco Franca; a recording of the meeting has been posted by the Brazilian Foreign Ministry's YouTube account.

The WTO Director General confirmed that Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and French Foreign Minister appealed to the World Trade Organisation with a request ‘to raise an issue of fertilisers’, to attract a wide expert audience ‘to provide access’ to fertilisers from this Eastern European region.

“We will decide what to do next. We need Brazil to produce [food]. If both this state and Ukraine fail to do this, there will be an increase in food prices in 2023 as well,” Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala noted.
