WHO to convene emergency committee on monkeypox spread
The World Health Organisation’s Emergency Committee will meet next week to assess the danger of an outbreak of monkeypox – as stated by WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, RIA Novosti reports
WHO Chief stressed that the global outbreak of monkeypox is clearly unusual and concerning. “For that reason I have decided to convene the Emergency Committee under the international health regulations next week, to assess whether this outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern,” he said.
The WHO has registered over 1,600 confirmed cases of monkeypox infection and about 1,500 suspected cases across 39 countries.
