WHO hopeful coronavirus pandemic will end in 2023

Countries have come a long way in the fight against COVID-19, and the World Health Organisation (WHO) hopes that by 2023 the spread of the virus will no longer be a pandemic – as stated by WHO Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, RIA Novosti reports

Meanwhile, Ghebreyesus did not specify in what period of the next year it will be possible to say with confidence that the COVID is over. The WHO, he said, is simply hoping that ‘at some point next year they will be able to say that COVID-19 is no longer a global health emergency’.

The head of the organisation recalled that a year ago, the growing Omicron strain of coronavirus had just been identified in the world. “At that time, COVID-19 was killing 50,000 people every week. Last week, less than 10,000 people lost their lives. That’s still 10,000 too many and there is still a lot that all countries can do to save lives, but we have come a long way,” Ghebreyesus said.
