“Some [experts] are suggesting that Omicron will be the last variant, but right now there is no way to know for sure. There is a possibility that a new variant, more contagious or more severe, may emerge,” warned the WHO spokeswoman.

According to her, greater vaccination coverage will reduce the risk of a new dangerous strain. Now there are no signs of such, but by autumn the situation may change. “There are currently no red flags of particular concern. But there is an understanding that it is impossible to assume that next week or in coming weeks they will not appear. We should not assume that by the autumn there won’t be much more significant or potentially dangerous outbreaks,” explained Ms. Vujnovic.

She stressed that the pandemic is not over yet, urging everyone to get vaccinated against the coronavirus.

At the same time, the Healthcare Ministry of Belarus announced yesterday that a new sub-strain of the Omicron strain has been identified in our country.
