Wagenknecht: Germany's participation in mission in Ukraine may draw it into conflict with Russia
Sahra Wagenknecht, a member of the Bundestag and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance – Reason and Justice party leader, believes the participation of the German military in a possible peacekeeping mission in Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire could draw Germany into a conflict with Russia if hostilities resume, TASS reports
"Ukraine needs security guarantees, but NATO soldiers will not be peacekeepers in a fragile ceasefire," Sahra Wagenknecht told the DPA news agency. She emphasised that this could draw Germany into ‘a destructive war with a nuclear power — Russia’ in the event that hostilities break out again. The politician added that Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance – Reason and Justice is the only party represented in the Bundestag that unequivocally opposes the deployment of German soldiers in Ukraine.
Sahra Wagenknecht believes that non-European countries are obliged to ensure a possible ceasefire in Ukraine. In her opinion, security guarantees should come from neutral powers, that is, from the countries that have been trying to mediate in the Ukrainian conflict all this time: Brazil, South Africa, and China. The MEP called on the candidates for the post of German Chancellor to clarify their position on this issue before the Bundestag election on February 23rd.
