Vučić: President of Belarus is a courageous person

This statement was made by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić during a meeting with international observers from the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly and the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, attended by a Belarusian observer – Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs and National Security of the Council of the Republic, Sergei Rachkov

The Head of Serbia noted the calm atmosphere in which the election campaign took place and expressed gratitude to Russia, Belarus and other CIS states for supporting his country.

In his address to the President of Serbia, the international observer from the CSTO PA, Belarusian senator Sergei Rachkov noted, “It is unnecessary to talk about Belarus-Serbia friendship, which has been proven by history. The best demonstration of these relations was the support of the Serbian people by the President of our country in 1999. I cannot but agree on the complexity of the international situation: after the elections in 2020, Belarus – just like Serbia today – became the object of illegal political and economic pressure from the West.”

At the same time, the parliamentarian expressed confidence that ‘our friendship, history, traditions, and traditional values should help us overcome these difficulties’. “Belarus is interested in developing comprehensive interaction with Serbia, as well as in raising the level of diplomatic co-operation, including at the level of ambassadors of our countries,” underlined Mr. Rachkov.

In response, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said, “President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko is a courageous person. He was the only head of state who supported Serbia twenty-three years ago and is now showing courage in the fight for his state. Serbs will always remember this and build good relations between our countries.”

The meeting also took place between the CSTO PA election observers at the elections and Serbian Foreign Minister Nikola Selaković, in a brief conversation with whom Sergei Rachkov stressed the need for mutual support in a situation of sanctions pressure from the EU and the USA.

According to preliminary data, Aleksandar Vučić won the presidential elections. His Progressive Party won the parliamentary elections and, together with the Socialist Party, won the majority in this Serbian legislative body. The mission of international observers, in its written opinion, positively assessed the electoral process in Serbia as consistent with the legislation and international obligations of this country.
