Belarus has chaired the CSTO since November 2022, in connection with which Aleksandr Volfovich was entrusted with the duties of Chairman of the Committee of Secretaries of the CSTO Security Councils. According to the current procedure, from January 2023, the position of the CSTO Secretary General for a three-year period was transferred to the representative of Kazakhstan. Aleksandr Volfovich noted that last November, by unanimous decision of the CSTO Collective Security Council, Imangali Tasmagambetov was appointed Secretary General. In 2020-2022, the representative of Belarus, Stanislav Zas, was the CSTO Secretary General.

In a conversation with journalists, Aleksandr Volfovich called it wise the decision of the Kazakh side to nominate Imangali Tasmagambetov to the post of CSTO Secretary General, since he boasts huge experience, making his way from an ordinary teacher to the Head of the Presidential Administration of Kazakhstan and the Head of the Kazakh Government; he also worked in the diplomatic and military spheres. “His appointment will contribute to the development of the CSTO Secretariat and the solution of the tasks assigned to the CSTO, primarily to ensure peace and security both on a regional and global scale,” Aleksandr Volfovich said.

Within the framework of the event, Aleksandr Volfovich also met with Imangali Tasmagambetov. They tackled topical issues of international and regional security, shared views on the situation in the CSTO area of responsibility, discussed current challenges and threats in the East European, Central Asian and Caucasian regions of collective security, paying special attention to the co-ordination of efforts to implement the priority areas of the CSTO activities in 2023.
