Volfovich: Belarus’ policy that the West dislikes is aimed at our people’s security

This was stated by the State Secretary of the Security Council, Aleksandr Volfovich, following today’s meeting of the Security Council at the Palace of Independence. He stressed that security aspects were given priority when discussing the issues related to the upcoming nationwide referendum.

“We are simply obliged to do everything to make our citizens feel safe – in daily life in general and directly during the preparation and holding of the referendum. The Head of State stressed that the collective West headed by the United States of America unfortunately dislikes the sovereign and independent policy of our state. However, this policy is primarily aimed at raising our people’s social standard of living and ensuring the population’s security. This peaceful corner in the centre of Europe does not suit our opponents today. We really see a continual political pressure on the part of the West towards Belarus, economic sanctions aimed at destabilising the situation, and the military component. The militarisation that is now taking place along our borders cannot but worry the Head of State as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and President of our country, cannot but worry us, the military who are responsible for security. We see all these risks and threats,” Mr. Volfovich said.

According to the State Secretary of the Security Council, such dangers pose threat today not only from the western side – which is predictable, as he asserted – but also from the south.

“The strategic deterrence measures are aimed at this, in addition to the measures to ensure security of the joint exercises that are taking place on the territory of our country these days, as well as a range of other measures. We have analysed the events of last year and those of 2020, also making appropriate amendments to the regulatory framework for attraction of all structures of the security block – such as the Armed Forces, the Emergencies Ministry and the Interior Ministry – regarding the use and involvement in the state system of responding to acts of terrorism, activities of terrorist organisations and illegal armed formations. Another wide range of measures has been carried out; it will prevent all negative attempts to destabilise the situation. We will be ready to ensure security of our citizens. The Head of State’s main emphasis was placed on ensuring security of election commissions. People who will perform these tasks should feel safe. We guarantee that they will be protected,” Mr. Volfovich emphasised.

The State Secretary also informed that, at the end of the Security Council meeting, the President presented the members of the Security Council with new distinctive badges for suit jackets.
