Violent bullfighting banned in Mexico City

Lawmakers in Mexico’s capital have approved ‘bloodless’ or non-violent bullfighting, in which no weapons are used against the animals but only distractions, as part of a bill to ban bullfighting, RIA Novosti reports

“We welcome with great joy the decision of the Congress of Mexico City to approve the resolution banning violent bullfighting. With this decision, we are moving towards a capital of change that respects the rights of animals and that will not tolerate them being mistreated or abused,” Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada wrote in her blog on social network X.

The bill to ban bullfighting was introduced on the initiative of citizens, who collected more than 27,000 signatures, and was widely supported by lawmakers: 61 deputies voted in favour of it, with 1 against. At first it implied a complete ban on bullfighting, but a week ago Brugada proposed to include in this initiative a proposal for ‘bloodless’ shows.

Any sharp objects that could harm animals or participants are now banned from bullfighting in Mexico City, instead only the use of cloak and capes are allowed.

“We are making it possible to put an end to the violence against living beings, but we are also ensuring that families that depend economically on bullfighting do not suffer, promoting a just transition to a sustainable cultural and economic model that harmonises cultural tradition with the principles of a modern and progressive society,” said PRD deputy Ernesto Villarreal, who supported the reform, during the debate.
