Sullivan noted that Washington and Beijing are trying to prevent competition between countries from veering into conflict or confrontation.

“One of the key elements is that as we have intense competition, but we also have intense diplomacy,” he explained.

The Assistant to the US President recalled that on May 10th-11th, he met with the Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, Wang Yi.

“We will, I hope, soon see American officials engaging at senior levels with their Chinese counterparts over the coming months to continue that work,” Sullivan added.

He expressed the hope that such contacts will facilitate a face-to-face meeting between the US and Chinese leaders.

“We are confident that it’s impossible to talk about the inevitability of a conflict or a cold war between the US and China,” Sullivan said.
