US pursuing colonial policy aimed at destabilising situation in Middle East, expert asserts

Joint actions of Turkey, Russia and Iran will make it possible to counteract the United States in Syria and prevent the crisis escalation in the country – as stated by Aleksei Avdonin, an analyst with the Belarusian Institute for Strategic Studies, in his talk with Alfa Radio

The presidents of Russia, Iran and Turkey – Vladimir Putin, Ibrahim Raisi and Tayyip Erdogan – held a meeting on the situation in Syria in Tehran on July 19th. Following the meeting, they underlined the relevance of the Astana format to settle the Syrian crisis, and also agreed to meet next time in Russia at Vladimir Putin's invitation.

“The meeting on the settlement of the situation in Syria in the Astana format was held for the first time in January 2017. The purpose of such meetings is not just to create a coalition against the United States in this region: [it is necessary] to ensure the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic, to destroy all terrorist cells there, to return the territory controlled by destructive forces to the subordination of the country's authorities and at the same time to squeeze out the American troops that are still there from the north-east of Syria," Mr. Avdonin said.

The United States expressed concern about the alliance of Russia and Iran after their Tehran meeting, saying ‘it is a very bad idea’. “Actually, Turkey, Iran and Russia have begun to openly and without any political correctness to declare that the US presence on the territory of Syria – and in the Middle East as a whole – is unacceptable. The United States is pursuing a colonial policy aimed at destabilising the situation in the Middle East. In turn, Turkey, Iran and Russia stand for stability in this region,” the expert explained.
