The article author notes that, in the European countries which were previously part of the socialist bloc, electricity is generated by nuclear reactors created using Soviet technology. Fuel for their operation is imported from the Russian Federation. Accordingly, the refusal of Russian supplies would create a true energy challenge for these states.

"An attempt to terminate contracts with Russia ahead of schedule could thus jeopardise the electricity supply for almost 100 million Europeans in the countries that rely on nuclear power plants as their most important source of clean energy," the publication reads.

In addition, it is noted that it may take years to find a replacement for Russian nuclear fuel supplies.
