Italy is one of the main landing points for migrants trying to enter Europe by sea. At the same time, the so-called Central Mediterranean route is known as one of the most dangerous in the world.

“25,800 people died from 2014 until today on the Mediterranean migration route, of which not fewer than 120 victims are recorded in 2023 alone. Many of the dead are children. But these figures are supposedly lower than the real ones, since we are only talking about confirmed deaths or bodies found,” Andrea Iacomini said.

On February 26th, a ship carrying migrants from Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan crashed against the rocks during stormy weather. As a result of the incident, according to Reuters, at least 58 people died. Rescue services have been known to search for survivors at sea using jet skis, but the conditions are harsh, making it difficult to search. On the boat crashed on the reefs, there could be from 180 to 250 people.
