UN Under-Secretary-General urges North Korea to start nuclear disarmament
UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu appealed to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and demanded that nuclear tests be cancelled and that steps be taken to completely denuclearise the Korean Peninsula, RIA Novosti reports
During the High-level Meeting of the UN General Assembly to commemorate and promote the International Day against Nuclear Tests, Izumi Nakamitsu said that Pyongyang should start real nuclear disarmament.
“I join others in calling on the DPRK to refrain from further nuclear testing, join the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), and immediately begin working with relevant parties to achieve a complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula,” the UN Under-Secretary-General said.
It is known that last year North Korea conducted eight missile tests, and this number has already reached 18.
