Ukraine’s Defence Minister: Merkel convinced NATO not to accept Ukraine and Georgia into the alliance

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel opposed the accession of Ukraine and Georgia to the North Atlantic Alliance in 2008 – as stated by the Defence Minister of Ukraine, Oleksii Reznikov, in his talk with La Razon, RIA Novosti reports

According to Mr. Reznikov, Angela Merkel spoke negatively about the possibility of NATO expansion during the Bucharest summit. "There was a real possibility that Ukraine and Georgia would become new members of the alliance. Americans and most Europeans supported that idea, but German Chancellor Angela Merkel opposed and convinced the others," he said.

A few days ago, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that Kiev would not be satisfied with any other decision of the North Atlantic Alliance summit in Vilnius, scheduled for July 11th-12th, except for an invitation to join the military bloc.
