Ukraine-Russia talks in focus of experts’ attention

The Russian Foreign Ministry informed that negotiations between Russia and Ukraine on settlement of a Ukrainian conflict are continuing in an online format, and Belarusian experts have shared their views on the topic with the ONT TV channel

“At the moment, I do not really believe in the success of negotiations. [As follows from] the theory and practice of talks, they will give a result only when one of the parties realises that it will not be able to defend its positions by military means. In this case, the Ukrainian regime is convinced it has enough military power to resist Russia. Accordingly, it behaves very contradictory,” political expert Aleksei Dzermant said.

“[Ukrainian authorities] seem to understand that the destruction is already huge, and economic losses are serious, but the West is behind them – continuing to assure them it will help. "Come on, fight until the last Ukrainian, not a step back, and so on," they say there. Due to propaganda, the Ukrainian leadership and a significant part of society have confidence that if they even do not win this confrontation, then at least they can reach an even score with Russia. This is a serious illusion, in my opinion, because the help of the West will be up to certain limits. Moreover, in case of a long-lasting fight, Russia will defeat Ukraine’s Armed Forces. It will simply take more time and resources. Unfortunately, there will also be more losses. However, it seems to me, the Kiev authorities are those who think the least about the losses of their own population,” the expert added.

In turn, independent military expert Aleksandr Pavlovsky, stressed, "Russia will not refuse to negotiate. It will show that it actually does not set aggressive tasks for itself."

“Meanwhile, it is quite difficult to negotiate with the Ukrainian side, since one of Russia's goals is the fight against Nazism. If a peace treaty is concluded, how will they [adherents of this Ukrainian regime] fight against themselves?” the expert asked a logical question, adding that it is also necessary to understand the US role in this conflict.

“This process envisages not an action of ‘Ukraine against Russia’ or vice versa. This is the situation that Americans played; this is their card. They are waging a proxy war in their own interests on others’ territory by someone else's forces," Mr. Pavlovsky summed up.
